Grey marbled cake with sugar roses
I'm absolutely in love with this cake! The marbled effect on this cake was completely accidental. My original design is an all grey cake with intricate piping on all 3 tiers. However, as I added black fondant to my white I realized how good it looked marbled. Turned out to be the best cake I've made thus far!
Love the colors of the sugar roses against the grey color.

Cherry blossom wedding cake
The cherry blossoms on this cake were made with no cutters. Each one was cut and shaped by hand. They're so beautiful!
Here's another view attached to the cake. Amazing how they all began with just a ball of gumpaste!
And finally the wedding cake! I love the simplicity of this.

Very hungry caterpillar
These cakes are for a a little girl who just turned 1!
Cupcakes were going to be added to this cute little smash cake by mom.
The dessert table looked really cute! Especially the cupcakes with the smash cake.

Roses, Berries & Watercolor Cake
This is one of my absolute favorite cakes! I love the look of the sugar roses and the arrangement along with the leaves and berries. It is so beautiful!
The watercolor effect was not the original design I had in mind. It only had all pink stripes but thought it looked plain. I luckily had enough drying time to do this and the results are gorgeous!

Mickey Mouse Cakes
These Mickey Mouse cakes were made two weeks apart. The first cake pictured is a birthday cake for baby Jakob who turned 1. I had so much fun making this cake!
The Minnie Mouse cake was inspired from a picture the mother had sent me. She wanted something simple and wanted to change some of the colors of the cake.
It always makes me happy when I'm requested to make beautiful cakes for such special occasions. It truly is an honor to be a part of their special day.Tuesday, October 15, 2013
Hydrangea birthday cake
I love the colors on these! Yes, I know it's fall but the birthday girl requested fun colorful flowers. This cake was inspired from my hydrangea dress cake I made last year.
Double barrel engagement cake and peony sugar flower
The peony sugar flower on this cake was made using my very own peony cutters. Yes, my own cutters! As much as I like the other cutters I've been using I often still have to alter the look of my petals. So why not make my own the way I like it? The cutters still needs improvement but I'm so excited about them. Will be selling them on Etsy soon. Stay tuned!

Cath Kidston inspired cake
It so sweet when a husband orders a cake for their wife. My client's wife is a big fan of Cath Kidston and wanted a cake inspired by her designs. I absolutely love the colors on this cake!
Okay, so I have a confession to make. I can't draw! In fact if you asked me to draw anything I could only come up with stick figures. But surprisingly when push comes to shove, I can somehow draw something decent on cakes. My husband was even surprised!

Tiffany blue color cake with a pink peony
My client requested a Tiffany blue color cake with a peony. This cake is for her sister's birthday and she loves this shade of blue. I love the combination of blue and pink so I decided on a pink sugar peony.
Double barrel twine cake with magnolia flower
This cake had a lot of firsts for me. It was my first double barrel cake, my first time using twine on a cake and my first sugar flower.

Jiu JItsu cake!
This very special cake is for my oldest brother who now holds a blue belt in Jiu Jitsu. The cake is a surprise and it was a big hit at his surprise birthday party!
I don't have much experience with gumpaste figures but with the help of a Craftsy class, I was able to create something cute.
I liked everything about this cake, my brother in his favorite color uniform, his dog biting his opponent's leg, but my favorite part of this cake is the gumpaste figure on the mat. His face expression is hilarious while his arm is locked in an arm bar.

Teal buttercream cake and red sugar peony
This is my first all buttercream cake.. I exclusively use swiss meringue buttercream for all of my cakes and never american buttercream. It's simply too sweet for my taste.
My customer does not like the taste of fondant so she requested an all buttercream cake. The cake design she wanted could only be achieved with all american buttercream and she was informed of the sweetness of this type of icing.

Roses and Watercolor
Pink is not my favorite color and in fact I rarely make a pink cake. But when requested I use it subtly.
Watercolor color is one of my favorite techniques. There's really no right or wrong way to do it & gives your cake that extra wow it needs.

Brush Embroidery and Sugar Peony Cake
I absolutely loved making this Peony! This is my first successful wired sugar Peony thanks to the godfather of sugar flowers Nicholas Lodge. Every sugar flower artist knows how valuable it is to use good quality gumpaste. His recipe makes a world of a difference. I'm able to roll the the gumpaste quite thinly without tearing. I used Satin Ice before and was always unsuccessful with wired petals. I'm never going back to commercially made gumpaste. Thanks Nicholas Lodge!
Last time I used brush embroidery technique was over a year ago when I just started cake decorating. So rusty at it and I had to it over a handful of times. I definitely need to practice my piping skills. Overall, this cake turned out beautifully!
Mom's hat box cake with sugar roses
I had originally planned on making my mom a Chanel Classic Flap cake. But I've seen a lot of them lately and wanted to create something else. For my mom's 63rd birthday I made her a hat box cake and boy it was a hit!

Ruffle Birthday Cake
This ruffle birthday cake is for a 21st birthday. There were a couple of firsts on this cake. This is my first attempt at a ruffle ball and luster technique.
I couldn't figure out the proper way to do the ruffle ball without having the bottom getting flat. Mysolution was to roll a rice krispy treats in a ball, cover it in fondant and stick a skewer in the middle making sure the ball is not too close to the work surface. I used royal icing to attach the ruffles onto the ball as it dries quickly. Now for the luster technique I was a little disappointed at the results. The vodka
didn't dry quickly enough for me to buff the luster dust. In Australia, a cake decorator's alcohol is used for this technique that allows them to achieve beautiful luster on the cakes. Unfortunately, there's no way I can do this without Everclear or clear liquor that has at least 90% alcohol content. I will do more research and see what else is available. But nonetheless, the cake still came out really beautiful!

Pretty Rose Cupcakes
These are the prettiest cupcakes I've made. I under estimated the time it took to make these cupcakes but they still turned out great in the short time I had.

Gold and Turquoise cake
Okay so I admit that this was not the design I had in mind. This cake forced me to think outside the box and my comfort zone.
There were a lot of firsts for me on this cake. The Klimt technique, luster brush design and edible image border are among some of them. I read on Sharon Wee's blog that you should never be afraid to try something new & to always push yourself. Today I'm pleased to say that mission is accomplished.

Tree Bark Cake with Sugar Succulents
Anniversary cake with the couple's initials. I've always loved the rustic look of tree bark cakes and the succulents are a perfect addition.
This is my first sugar succulents and I love it! It has become my new favorite. I will post a tutorial on this soon. It's surprisingly easy!

Avengers Cake
This cake is for a dear friend of mine. Her little boy Thierry turned 4 and is an Avengers fan. This is also my first "special effects" cake. LED lights were installed in the cake to make Iron Man's eyes light up. The kids were in awe of this and the looks on their faces are priceless!

Monogram Cake with an oversized Peony
Oh how I love sugar Peonies! This cake is a 30th birthday present and the request was a small cake with sugar flowers. Perfect! A small cake and an oversized sugar flower is my favorite cake to do.
What a lovely little cake!

Guess Whoo? Gender Reveal Owl Cake
This is my first gender reveal cake and I had so much fun making it! Only 3 people knew the gender of the baby including myself so I knew this cake had to be special.
The gumpaste owls are so adorable! Can't get enough of them. They really are the best part of this cake. The tree branch is made of gumpaste as well and the rest are made of fondant.

I know I say this about all of my cakes but this really is one of my favorites!

Damask and Red Sugar Roses Cake
I'm in love with this cake! I've seen this cake design recreated by numerous cake artists so I'm not sure who to give credit to. But one cake artist that I truly admire is Leslea Matsis! I absolutely love her sugar flowers most especially her sugar roses. I aspire to be as good as her one day. With that said here is the version I created this past weekend...
The shade of red is created using Americolor Red Red and a hint of black. I don't know how much color I used but I added the color until it is to my liking. One thing to remember is that dark rich colors is lighter when it's dry. So when you think you've achieved the desired color make it a shade or two darker than you want. The picture below is the true color of the sugar roses and NO photo filter was used.
It also looks beautiful on a single tier cake.
This by far my favorite cake! It's classic and romantic. The sugar roses just take my breath away...

Despicable Me Minion Cake
I'm so smitten with this cake! Love these minions! Happy birthday James!
The minions are made of half gumpaste & fondant. The most difficult part of the minions are the eyes. The eyes were hand painted with light brown, black and a small speck of white edible colors. Sure you can use fondant but it looks more realistic when painted. I used spaghetti for the hair and colored it with black edible marker. Another option is to use Licorice strings.
Bridal shower cake
The maid of honor requested a "unique" cake for the bride on her bridal shower. She wanted to incorporate watercolor and the colors pink and gray with ruffles.
This is my first attempt at making a ruffled effect on a cake. They were made by cutting circles, folding them in half and once again in half. (You can find out about the watercolor technique in my previous watercolor cake blog).
